People forced to take jobs they can’t stand. Family/friends moving in together who can’t stand each other. That’s the kind of hardship on the table here. People are going to wish for the McJob economy soon. A lot of what goes away in the next 18 months isn’t coming back.

To put it differently: At what point does the freedom allowed by widespread surveillance and tracking look better than the lack of freedom imposed by lockdown? And why do we need to waste 3, 6, 9 months to get to that point?

There are some interesting lights in the tunnel. The Portland ethos is providing local resilience, and points to a post-weirding logistics/ fulfillment system that isn’t quite delivery yet isn’t quite retail.
