Gavin Newsom is now down to literally lecturing young people directly about “time to grow up” and stop partying on beaches.
Appreciate how he’s really trying to thread the needle between really ramping up the social shaming pressure but sounding reassuring on civil liberties.
Conversation
I don’t think young people quite get how long they will have to live with the memory of how they acted during this period, memorialized in photos and videos. It’s one thing to make ok-boomer jokes, quite another to allow yourself to be written into history as the boomer-killers.

Sure the epidemiological science here is uncertain and operating with low levels of monitoring/data but that’s all the more reason to err on the side of making sure you’re doing no harm.

I like Newsom. He does a decent job of only thing I expect from a public leader at a time like this: focus people on how they can help. Listening to Trump’s pressers, I end up thinking about how he can do more harm and how I can protect myself. Boosting best vs worst instincts.

I honestly know nothing about him because I don’t pay attention to local politics. But I’m mostly very tolerant of the standard repertoire of politician flaws. Even in Trump. What gets my goat is open sadism, driven by naked ressentiment, against the most vulnerable.
