If all you’re ever exposed to is the former, it will seem arbitrary and authoritarian. You’ll either get religious about compliance or resist. Depends on how you view authority. The behaviors are indistinguishable from superstition unless you gain literacy in the second mode.

The “only thing to fear is insufficient fear” effect has been fascinating. People are reacting with a fear premium beyond their personal risk that doesn’t seem altruistic in tone. It’s a fear that’s proportionate to a sort of internalized individualized amortized collective risk.

Yeah. I’m a graphic designer, and I thought I understood exponentials well enough. But then one day I had to illustrate exponential growth and decided to use a line graph. If you zoom in infinitely and adjust the scale freely, you can keep getting the same curve over and over.
