My team just implemented this for Instacart. You accrue hours of sick pay for every X hours worked. When you use it, we also forgive any negative impact to your “attendance points”, which measures your reliability at showing up to work. You assume they coexist. I've yet to see them do so. Service industries don't even do UNPAID sick leave. Failure to show to your shift can get you fired, no matter the reason. And no, there's also no guaranteed hours. I'm sure that won't have any bad knock-on effects today. /s

I may be generalizing over all service industries based on the ones I worked when I was poor, and the ones my friends still work to this day. But the ones you need to worry about today are the ones which exploit the poor. That's a huge infection vector with no solution in sight.

And if the manager likes you you'll also get offered stats and extra shifts. If not, or you're new, you'll get scheduled last to fill in the gaps and you get what you get.

And people think unions are passé.

A few of them do, it generally isn't like a guarantee guarantee but more like a typical allocation (which, if close to full time, is always coincidentally just under what's needed to qualify for benefits).

So, while paid sick leave is not really a thing, you could base it on the last - say - month of typical allocation.

When I worked at Olive Garden as a waiter they told me that if I didn’t come in I would be fired immediately when I had a fever.

Probably varies by manager but either way you’re not gonna get paid if you don’t work
