I've been biting my tongue for about two weeks now: "Remote conference" completely misunderstands the purpose of conferences and is DOA. The entire point of a conference is that it's not remote.

The talks portion of a conference, while it may be informative or even entertaining, is there to make it a plausible business expense for everyone to fly out and stay in mid-level hotels. Conferences are about the "hallway track." I'm dubious that it can be replicated online.

The number of twitter-scrolling wallflowers at larger conference lobbies is a good indicator. I’m usually one of them at events where I’m not known.
