I've been biting my tongue for about two weeks now: "Remote conference" completely misunderstands the purpose of conferences and is DOA. The entire point of a conference is that it's not remote.
The talks portion of a conference, while it may be informative or even entertaining, is there to make it a plausible business expense for everyone to fly out and stay in mid-level hotels.
Conferences are about the "hallway track." I'm dubious that it can be replicated online.
The sidebar chat in zoom or similar is far better than half the sad-ass low-serendipity conference hallways I’ve been in 😄. If you happen to be already well-networked at an event and people are eager to meet you, it’s great. If you’re a faceless-nobody attendee not so much.
