Have you ever quit a job or other secure situation to pursue a passion project/mission that’s NOT a startup, and is more than just going free-agent for generic higher freedom? If so: what did you quit, when, and to pursue what passion?

Yes. Several times. Most recently, quit a lucrative gig in tech consulting to build @RobinsCafeSF. Sold the cafe 3 years later. (Thank god!)

So many times, but what is an example of not a startup but not free-agent for generic higher freedom? I quit a very nice position producing video for a land developer in TX to move to NYC and attend @sfpc, with the goal of somehow becoming involved in the nyc arts and tech scene

Yeah... writing a novel or screenplay, social work, Doctors Without Borders, inventing your own programming language, working on Riemann hypothesis...

Quit finance (quant, IB, funds management) to write sci-fi for teenagers 🤷‍♀️ Quit 2014, book deal 2016, working author ever since.

Honestly, I treated it like a startup though. And I think that has helped a lot both in managing my mood/nerves, and in my focus/strategy.

(This is a very happy list of replies to read! Thank you for starting this thread!) About a year ago, I left Khan Academy, where I was doing edtech R&D, roughly to start an experimental media studio with @michael_nielsen. (e.g. https://numinous.productions/ttft/ )

In 2011, I quit my job as an academic librarian (full benefits, pension) to buy & run the local independent movie theatre when the previous owner put the business up for sale ($50,000 Canadian).

Left lawyering in 2007 to join the US Foreign Service. Kids 12, 10, 8, 5. Scary, frustrating, exhilarating by turns. 5 countries, 3 languages later, now empty nesters overseas(weird). Just got a letter from my eldest listing how the decision enriched his life. #NoRegrets
