Important point. Pandemic response with Chinese characteristics. OTOH if the whole world were like China, we’d be in hellish overresponse right now probably.https://twitter.com/marreis/status/1235804908810469376 …

One issue is political structure: what if the Chinese have a political structure that can effectively deal with a crisis of this type, and the west does not.

Lijian is still out here trying to lay the foundation for the claim that the coronavirus didn't originate from China. That near-certain reality is too inconvenient, and thus China is trying to distance itself from the inevitable rebound. been stuck on this half-sentence from another tweet of yours: "...with a decade of deglobalization fallout in its wake" I've been saying for ages that on strategic tech stuff like chip fab & telco hw, things went much too far, but maybe this is the catalyst for ++revisiting

I’m surprised more aren’t arguing that China has exaggerated numbers and over responded in order to display state efficiency and reverse the early impression of state incompetence due to initial info suppression. Dunno if this take is true. But it would fit some brains nicely.

I hate this so much but yes. No one else appears to be able to mobilize their state nearly as fast as the supreme authoritarianists.

the standard counter to this is Taiwan, also possibly South Korea but we need to wait and see whether the flattening of case growth there over the past two days starts becoming an actual reduction

The problem for the US/west is that their non/responses are now on much greater display deeper into the crisis. China's initial mishandling (which was always kind of wild to me given their previous rodeos...) has been all but forgotten in the melee right now

On Tuesday, The Citizen Lab published a report on the censorship that occurred during the early stages of China's epidemic. If you have followed me since January, you would have known this was happening. The scope was even more shocking in retrospect: https://citizenlab.ca/2020/03/censored-contagion-how-information-on-the-coronavirus-is-managed-on-chinese-social-media/ …
