Interesting! A bit hard to follow, and probably impossible for anyone who hasn't thought about these issues.
The core point is that things are complex and not amenable to ideology.
I suspect energy concerns together with technical advances will drive some supply chain locality

3D printing already has a significant impact in speeding up design iterations, handling one-off needs like prosthetic fittings, etc. The impact on the supply chain is to reduce need for inventory off slow-moving parts, substituting commodities like filament.
