Sometimes it seems like people need reminding that being practical does not require being an asshole. You can close borders politely. You can test passengers coming off planes courteously. You can refuse handshakes nicely.

Bad things have to come from somewhere. You don’t have to be an asshole to people who have a closer link to that somewhere than you do. Sure, critique systems and even dangerous cultural practices that externalize risks to others. But you can be humane about it.

The next nasty thing to hit humanity might be traced to someone who looks like you. Or a cultural practice you have identity invested in. Golden rule, etc. This shit is not any harder to deal with gracefully than like an asshole. You have to wash your hands either way.

I am not one of those civility-above-all cupcake fascist types but there’s conditions/stressors worth letting go composure over, and ones where doing so is a kind of childishness. So expect to be patronized/treated like a badly behaved child if you can’t tell the two apart.

If you feel like unloading on someone because of what they represent rather than something they personally did, that’s a yellow flag. If that someone is also equal to or weaker than you, it’s a red flag. If you act on the impulse, you’re likely an asshole.
