Wattpad seems better at monetization; Royal Road basically just makes money from running ads, while Royal Road authors make money by putting an author's note at the end of each chapter that says, "Like this story? Check out my Patreon, where chapters are posted 1 week early!"

A big source of "competition" for Royal Road is authors moving their stories to Kindle Unlimited once they've built up an audience. Means story has to be removed from Royal Road (since KU demands exclusivity). KU (Amazon's "Netflix for ebooks") seems most profitable for authors.
