Any recommendations on the parody
Do you like 50s scifi? For some reason I feel like you would.
I just started on Star Trek TNG and i'm loving it so much. The Orville is definitely a great continuation/parody.
Depends what you are after. You strike me as the sort of person who would thoroughly enjoy Lois McMaster Bujold, especially the whole Miles Vorkosigan series. (But start at _The Warrior's Apprentice_, and only read the earlier books once you are into the universe...)
