It is obvious that all religion is escapism but it’s not so obvious that all escapism is religion religion: belief in the net benevolence of things you cannot control if you commit to not observing them as well if you don’t look at it, it will be nice to you

So I can totally get that religions converted to in adulthood count as escapism - but that is surely a very special case for religion?

Born true believers who stay true into adulthood are definitely escapists too. They just often never become conscious of what they’re escaping from. Fish in water who don’t know about air.
