It's just wanting to be the cool kid with the cool clothes and the lip gloss, same thing, different technology

Except there’s millions of dollars in play for the bif winners. I think that distorts cool-kid motives a bit.

Being in a band seems like a niche version. Strongly believe social media has basically killed, or at least horrifically maimed, irl meatspace diy culture. Things change, some things deserve to be grieved.

It’s a relative of “pro athlete,” which is to say a very visible way to make it, especially in the absence of other visible ways to make it, without (obvious) gatekeepers.

This is the correct take I think. It's "footballer" or "singer" or other highly visible to children high status and high wealth role. But with the added bonus of YouTuber seems more achievable with less talent (it isn't).

I don’t think it maps to the 80s so much as maps to the 50/60s/70s jet set lifestyle. It’s like being a Talented Mr. Ripley hanger-on except this time you can actually leverage it into becoming a real player and joining the elite club.

I don’t think there was an equivalent - there was no concept of a 100, 1000, or even 100000 true fans - there were regional (Joe Montana) vs. global celebrity (Magic Johnson, Madonna) which was a function of the reach of their platforms & were largely aspirational vs. achievable
-
I should add immediately achievable - my girls want a YouTube channel today - I was mostly happy imagining myself in the Olympics some day many years in the future
