What was the equivalent to wanting to be a YouTube/Instagram/TikTok influencer for a teenager in the 80s? I honestly can’t map it to anything we were even thinking about then. It doesn’t seem to quite map to wanting to be a performer in the traditional sense, which still exists.

It's just wanting to be the cool kid with the cool clothes and the lip gloss, same thing, different technology

Except there’s millions of dollars in play for the bif winners. I think that distorts cool-kid motives a bit.

Being in a band seems like a niche version. Strongly believe social media has basically killed, or at least horrifically maimed, irl meatspace diy culture. Things change, some things deserve to be grieved.
