It’s a relative of “pro athlete,” which is to say a very visible way to make it, especially in the absence of other visible ways to make it, without (obvious) gatekeepers.

This is the correct take I think. It's "footballer" or "singer" or other highly visible to children high status and high wealth role. But with the added bonus of YouTuber seems more achievable with less talent (it isn't).

Being in a band seems like a niche version. Strongly believe social media has basically killed, or at least horrifically maimed, irl meatspace diy culture. Things change, some things deserve to be grieved.
