Since WW2, the story of humanity has increasingly been the story of the top 100 or so charismatic big cities. The ones that can each lay claim to an important subplot of the human story. Not necessarily the biggest ones but the ones that you instantly associate with a big story.

The force of alt-culture against capital rise has always been centrifugal in Seattle. Hair rock lends grunge angst, populist lends antifa, AMZN, B and SBUX drive socialist rage. Globalization minus alt-culture is Beijing v2. To me, Seattle's brand story = counterculture.

IMO international capital has successfully cordycepted the countercultural side of Seattle. If you oppose open borders, Seattle antifa will punch you for being a "fascist"...they're just goons for globalization. Gone is the spirit of the '99 WTO protests.
