I just estimated that in $/word terms, my consulting work pays about $1.20 - $3/word.
Most I've ever been paid for magazine writing is $0.55/word
When I pay contributors to ribbonfarm (non-editorial contributors) it works out to 2.5-5c/word ($100 flat for a 2-4k word post)

the consulting rate is meaningful because all my output is in the form of meeting discussion notes, though of course much of the value delivery is via conversation. Still, it's useful to think of it as ($ billed for the hours)/(word count of notes email)

yeah I should estimate that... haven't been tracking word counts there

In a year and a bit of freelancing I've found that the further I get from the actual product, the more money I make. Consulting > setting development writing > actually writing the thing.
