Back then everybody outside the Soviet zone was very happy, almost deliriously so. Yay Cold War over, world peace around the corner, end of history is a good thing... not realizing the shitshow would spill out of the Soviet zone with Islamic terrorism as the primary vector

But positive story (Internet) was big enough that it *still* seemed like a relatively best-case scenario. I’d wager even most Soviet zone people thought so, despite “losing” the Cold War.

We’re still talking about the US election, right? You’re saying there’s a parallel between Bush Sr getting elected and Trump getting elected? And/or between Bill Clinton and, uh, Bernie Sanders?

Yes and yes, but remember this is an election fraught with global significance not just the US. The US is Punxsutawney. The presidential election is the groundhog looking at his shadow. The world historical outlook for 2020s = “6 more weeks of winter” question.
