Watching Godzilla: King of Monsters (2019). It is fascinatingly bad and stupid. I’m always intrigued by why bad entries in extended universes fail. Something lifeless and mechanical about the storytelling here. Kinda like Rise of Skywalker.

There is a storytelling failure mode where absurd fantastical stuff is juxtaposed with high gravitas character acting that creates a truly campy effect (failed seriousness). You need stylized acting like Jeff Goldblum in Jurassic Park. Not a Vera Farmigia treating it Oscar-style.

MCU and the Nolan Batman movies struck the right kind of stylized note. DCEU and this MonsterVerse don’t. Though King Kong kinda got it right with Jack Black. He’s like Goldblum, a fundamentally comic-bookish actor.

Heh the Ospreys being launched out of an oversize B2 are like a budget version of the SHIELD Helicarrier

Okay I may have just watched the worst movie of my life. I get points for this.

Why do I do these things? Because I don’t believe in living an optimized life.

If they had made something involving the culture implied by the underwater city, and their relationship with Godzilla, that could have been really interesting.
