there's no notable aesthetic difference between a planet on the other side of this galaxy versus a foreign one. It makes the narrative complicated. Mass Effect did this though, but they were sentient machine invaders

This is awesome, and/but it wasn't clear to me, on a fast read, whether these are common-cause synchronies/symmetries/correlations initiated in the distant past or if there's maybe light-speed-bounded-spooky-action-at-a-distance going on "right now"?

For some reason a lot of people did not Star Wars: The Crystal Star by Vonda McIntyre (author of prob my fav book: Dreamsnake); but yes, even Star Wars, famousest space opera , has tread this ground in the past; and it was cool!
