The short version you want is: America chose "freedom" over "flourishing"...

And freedom is, indeed, just another word for nothing left to lose. This choice was made on both sides. On the left hippies chose the freedom of drugs then divorce, of freedom from personal obligations. On the right the choice made was freedom from social obligations.

Depression is a rational response to the obvious evidence. Collectively we were taught to 'look on the bright side' and avert our gaze from long term consequences. We naively believe that someone is going to take care of the problems and it'll all work out.

The truth is no one's in charge and everyone's just out to to make a quick buck. This is how we wound up with a devastated environment full of plastic waste and pollution.
