the think tank/institutional investor/policy influence world is really very much like the brick-and-mortar version of social media... people follow and @ each other, do the equivalents of liking/RTing/sharing, muting/blocking, things go viral, there are memes, etc.

the major differences are a) it hasn't been aggregated into a few platforms (though big marquee conferences like TED and Davos seem to serve that purpose) b) the payments are not micro
