Etymology of this Hindi /Urdu word कत्था katthā (also color कत्थई katthaī = dark brownish) has intrigued me. And yes, it's a Congrats of Sanskrit क्वाथ kvāth = decoction, infusion. Not only that, even our Ayurvedic kar̥hā काढ़ा and lentils dish kar̥hī कढ़ी are related.

Abhishek Avtans अभिषेक अवतंस 🌐 @avtansaGood to know that Sindhi, Hindi, Bhojpuri word kaṛhī कढ़ी, Marathi, Gujarati कढी kaḍhī are all related to Prakrit kaḍhia कढिअ (boiled) which is related to Sanskrit kvathita क्वथित (boiled). In Braj area, kaṛhī कढ़ी is one of the chappan bhogs (56 offerings) offered to Krishna https://twitter.com/sftmumbai/status/1194595831434731521 …Show this thread1 reply 1 retweet 9 likesShow this thread -

I haven’t heard that word. palita meaning grey is a tatsama if samskRta word of course. More common word for grey is bUdu (ashen) from the samskRta word for ash bhUti

It sure how to spell it since I’m not literate in Kannada. Might also be Tamil derived

I am not aware of any tamiZ derived words for colours. If it was, it would be most unusual to have the doubled consonant -dd- as thardoesnt exist in tamiZ. Do you want to record the pronunciation and share?

I’ll check with my parents first to make sure I’m pronouncing it right

It seems to be a specifically madhwa Brahmin word for it and seems to be spelled palidya in this recipe (my family is madhwa but speaks a weirdly Tamil-corrupted dialect from Coimbatore so our pronunciations are unreliable) http://mommycooksyummy.blogspot.com/2016/01/majjige-palidya-majjige-huli.html?m=1 …

Oh you are talking about the food item. paLidya- we use it in sankEti too. I think other kannaDigas also use it. ganji-paLadya/paLidya etc.

Yes, original was response to the thread about various words for kadhi in north india and I was wondering why the Kannada word is not a cognate of “kadhi”

majjigehuLi, mOrkuZambu, majjigabulusu with a lot of varieties and names is all too common in the south. It may not have been borrowed and hence the names for it are not borrowed from samskRta or elsewhere.
