My anecdotal observations fit this, but I wonder if this phenomenon is a result not of beliefs but of a) class solidarity + b) law of large numbers = greater chance of an anchor altruist or two emerging in the mass-class to coordinate non-tragic commons responses

If 1 in 100 is altruist leader and there are 100 coach and 10 first class passengers the coach class will achieve altruistic coordination and first class will go Hobbesian with 90% probability right?

Alternative - some % of the population believe people are untrustworthy and so aim to earn enough money to not have to trust them directly. The ones that don’t succeed at getting rich then have a better chance at survival if they cooperate/act altruistically.

I get the first part, that’s just adverse selection of non-altruists into wealth... but the ones that don’t get rich... why would they turn altruistic? They’re more likely to free ride in natural altruists. Wolves don’t turn into sheep just because they fail at wolfing.
