apart from the first 100-ish accounts followed through existing IRL friendships and acquaintances, I found a lot of my early twitter friends in
@vgr's mentions. remarkably large # of my twitter friends are people who follow him. 355 out of 807, or ~44%.

My mutuals mostly came from blog readership initially, but once twitter account acquired a life of its own I mostly follow people based on interesting responses to one of my prompt games or crowdsourcing questions. I do little to no "chain following". It's all primary.

the cool thing to me about the nature of the network is such that there are chain patterns even if you don't perceive them, eg interesting people do still first come to your timeline through other people, and then you follow them based on the quality of their replies

I think that has been more true in recent years due to the way RTs and likes work now. Internal boosting has slowly become more important than links as currency.
