Is it just me or are we experiencing a slightly exhausting glut of people reading and summarizing huge volumes of books? Kinda like professional readers... reading for the sake of reading rather than as a side effect of figuring something out for themselves.

I find that when I’m figuring out something for myself, the relevant papers and books are rarely “good” and often extremely bad, but the mystery pushes me onward - hard to just “read good books”

The strategic trick is realizing that the 3-5 you go deep on are almost certainly NOT going to be the consensus seminal references in the field. That’s a recipe for boring incrementalism. You get interesting results by putting weird, unexpected obscure picks in your top 5.
