Wonder if any think tanks have studied this, via analysis of statements by top military leaders, procedural innovations etc. Initially I thought it was ongoing praetorian-guardization, but it's more general than that. It's not just about elite units allied with power.

THE pathology of the US is societal lack of respect. Non-poor don’t respect the poor. Middle class don’t respect how hard running things can be. Everyone thinks they know better about medicine or earth sciences. Totally cross-cutting, totally corrosive.

This started I suspect in the 60s, and spread for clear reasons. But my point here is the US military avoided this for a long time. I don’t know if that’s STILL true. Abu Ghraib, general war opposition, and endless Iraq/Afghanistan have not been popular.
