Hypothesis: The novel as a literary form kinda ended with the end of history. It’s been reruns and reboots and refractors and recasts since 1992. Movies evolved via comix into extended universes though.

Homer wrote epic poems mostly. The novel wasn't really a popular form until Cervantes, and even then took a long time to take off.
