Hypothesis: The novel as a literary form kinda ended with the end of history. It’s been reruns and reboots and refractors and recasts since 1992. Movies evolved via comix into extended universes though.

This take is weird especially considering one of the most successful pieces of genre literature, the Harry Potter series, was published from 1997 onwards.
