The critique of the genre was an interesting element (actually more of a first example of a potential new post-ratiocinative genre). The mystery is not solved in the usual way through holmes/poirot style reasoning, though there is a detective of that type in the plot.

“Knives Out” is one of my favorite movies in recent memory. It’s a well-written, well-acted, hilarious critique of the mystery genre & equally, a cutting commentary on class privilege. Reminded me in turns of Clue, Get Out, Gosford Park, and Clue and Sorry To Bother You.

The fact that the characters were deeply aware of the genre’s conventions made it particularly fun. I see a parallel between Get Out’s use of racism to reflect on horror (& vice versa) and Knives Out’s critique of privilege & inheritance to illuminate the mystery genre.
