It’s very easy to control your answers when it is text but with speech people can meander and lose their train of thought - if a journo wants to get someone off their talking points to an original thought a call will achieve better than written statements

otoh, people with no particular reason to want to be in the media are likely to simply say no, so it's a double-edged sword...

For some stories, when the storyline & questions are clear (and also where language may be a barrier with non-native English speakers) I ask first for Q&As by email. When the story is more open or vague, I prefer phone because I can improvise w/ questions based on their responses

Also Q&As in writing with scientists can sometimes transform into journal articles... Often, a conversation via phone or in person is the only way to cut through that to human side
