In the Doctor Who weeping angles arc, things that look like marble statues are really evil aliens that cannot move while you are watching, but if you look away they move closer and closer until they kill you

I'm going to strain and overload the metaphor a bit. They are "statues" in the sense that they're still (ie not doing anything surprising or unpredictable) while you're looking at them. When you look away, they get up to dark shennanigans. So spectation is a form of control.

For me all this thing around is a very nice example of the power of religious stories.

Whatever opinion one may have on this subject, and on that of religion, one can only be struck by the force of eschatological religious texts. The figure of the Antichrist for some is that of the savior for others (and conversely and that is what is strong).
