Why are peripheral recognition and handshake protocols so hard? When I connect my laptop to an external monitor, it invariably screws up the audio settings somehow. Then there's the 20 year old problem of connecting to projectors still being janky.

Corollary - it works better in software. Joining a hangout in a conference room is easier / more reliable than using the supplied cable. Printing using AirPrint from phone more reliable than from PC. Conclusion - get a Mac.

I do use a Mac. These are Mac problems. Mostly with non Mac peripherals

Because "people" insist on perpetual backward compatibility. Sure they wish the old protocols had been dropped 10 yrs ago -- but they're not willing to drop old protocols TODAY because that would entail a week of hassle.
