I’d say the first few thousands were grandfathered in from blog readership, but most twitter followers seem only vaguely aware or entirely unaware of stuff I post off twitter.

Beyond 10k I suspect preferential attachment is the main reason. Like joining a queue on the theory that anything with a queue must be worth it. “10k followers... there must be something there...”

"Social proof" (another facet of preferential attachment) is thoroughly dead here, thanks to the botnets and tweetdeck manure-spreaders. Maybe it's just something you bring here instead.
