It's not necessarily sociopaths, it can also be highly speculative wild ideas motivated more by what one would like to be the case rather than what is the case eg. I don't think the quantum astral plane hawkers are all frauds, they took some wrong turns & are down the rabbit hole
A lot of supposed modern superstitions are not so much anti-scientific as cynical exploits of fundamental uncertainties and ambiguities in scientific results for political gain. “Inconclusive” is an invitation to certain kinds of sociopaths to jump to self-serving conclusions.
