I feel the same, but it doesn't have to be a binary, just often is. It's amazing that self-made rich people aren't really smarter than average, but maybe just more obsessed with success and also just very lucky in starting conditions and along the way.

Whenever I use the word “interesting” people seem to either conflate with “smart” or even directly substitute. The two are not the same for me. Interesting: ability to surprise me repeatedly Smart: ability to think through complex and messy information to make good decisions

Many rich people are also smart people. Few are interesting. Many interesting people are also smart people. Few are rich. Almost nobody is rich and interesting without being smart. Maybe some trusties.

Interesting tends to be the result of a certain amount of privilege and childhood security. Smart tends to be mostly genes. Rich tends to be some mix of drive and luck. The luck can be 100%, but 100% drive is vanishingly rare. Drive is some illegible mix of nature, nurture.

Interesting and smart are both high in privilege / childhood security, but often achiever parents kill interesting by making the smart kids "do reps" at school and crowd out the curiosity the creates interesting, tho it amps drive / persistence.
