I think of Janan Ganesh as the FT's Ross Douthat. Great prose, glued to a bizarre cultural-ideological project. His main hobbyhorse is that we should all appreciate the cultural riches of neoliberal globalism more, coupled with an America-philia only a brit could conjure.

in USSR there was a phrase "china pioneer" - those who starts with creating obstacles and hardships and then heroically overcomes them (and praising resulting martyrs, heroes etc). I think this its the same phenomenon
