I read the Gervais Principle recently (I have followed ribbon farm for awhile but somehow never saw that essay series) and I'm curious about how to classify highly ranked ICs (e.g. staff/principle engineer, high performing sales person) ...

In theory they would be losers (or maybe sociopaths) but definitely not clueless. However, they have been promoted up the chain due to their work and are getting paid (in theory) commensurate to their output -- thus not losers.
