Unless you’re in sales, it’s much easier and more interesting to work on free samples of yourself rather than business cards or intro spiels. It won’t lead to anything either but you’ll at least enjoy cold-start conversations more. “What do you do?” “Here’s a free sample”

I think offline networking is a stage in the funnel that leads them to getting to know your work via linkedin, twitter or newsletters :)

Yes, networking qua networking is over-exploited, and mostly useless now that social media / the internet exists. Either you know of / about the person and don't need to "network," or you are wasting time throwing darts randomly instead of engaging with interesting people.
