Do any of you wear N90 masks when the AQI is high? I have one and should, but it feels both awkward and somehow rude to do it when most people are going about their business with no sign of respiratory distress

This is pretty low on the Pareto curve of protecting yourself from air pollution. Get good air filtration for your house and buy a HEPA cabin air filter for your car, and you're covering 90% of your bases. Buy a PM detector to verify they work and are sized correctly.

preventative measures are always more effective than reactionary measures. You should do it anyway

Most people don't wear earplugs when they go to rock shows either. They spend their golden years deaf.

It may feel awkward, but I don't think it's rude. Getting stared at for wearing a mask can feel awful at first, but over time, it feels less emotionally charged, takes up less attention, feels more normal.

Your cultural mileage may vary. You see similar things in Tokyo all the time.
