For once a meme seems to have important content as well and isn’t just spreading because it’s good at spreading. Though it’s good at spreading too. I suspect the meta commentary is 10x higher than actual use of the line in real life, which you’d expect of a good meme. twitter.com/BethLynch2020/…

I think Tyler misreads this. While he’s right that Boomers are viewed as a force of nature, ‘Ok Boomer’ signals agency to fellow Ms/Zs rather than impotence. I hear it as, “we can just go around these people or run out the clock on them. They no longer matter. twitter.com/tylercowen/sta…

The Rick and Morty line “don’t think about it” is a distant, less hostile cousin that disregards general weirdness rather than a specific antagonist

where it doesn’t work is where the target clearly has less power than you, in which case it degenerates to regular contempt rather than ok-to-power
like a guy saying “ok metoo” would backfire badly

I hear a note of humility too as in, “I don’t have the right answer but yours is obviously too simplistic and not even wrong”

Also done right it breaks identity politics. By acknowledging a label the other party can’t/won’t challenge, you peg the view as saying more about the self-identification than the matter at hand. It boxes up the view in an identity

In all cases, the main necessary and almost sufficient condition for ok * to work is that * must have just trotted our a very *-ey derp in an attempt to coerce engagement out of the okayer.
If there isn’t a derp move it’s much harder to deploy effectively. Derp momentum judo.

I got utterly demolished by an “ok furry” recently, it was kind of traumatizing
