I’m trying to get a sense of when the elites-masses schism truly became irreversible. I think it was the 1890s. Masses = people defined by specialized industrial economic identities, not necessarily poor or laboring classes. So includes people like Wall Street grinders.

I heard a historian make the case that pre-printing press the monarch could present different sides to different groups, which made people like them better. Printing press meant mass distribution, and what you said to A gets heard by B, suddenly it’s hard to please everyone.
