I’m trying to get a sense of when the elites-masses schism truly became irreversible. I think it was the 1890s. Masses = people defined by specialized industrial economic identities, not necessarily poor or laboring classes. So includes people like Wall Street grinders.

Wouldn’t this go further back in history, when every John Smith was a blacksmith and a Jane Baker was a literal baker? I.e specialised industrial roles were so clear it was your last name.

It happens when choice/culture becomes so rich that you feel lost. Meaning it happens differently depending on the facet of culture that matters most to you. Hits readers first (too many books) then movie buffs then the music-centered then TV watchers.
