Spaceship Earth is a large bureaucratic corporation with pretensions to being a body politic with a larger identity. Kinda like those tourist trap towns run by cruise lines. Public Earth is a tourist trap run by Privatized Earth.

A permanent lament in old big companies is “we spend all our time firefighting” Literal fire season in CA makes me wonder: is “firefighting” allegorical sine qua non of late industrial tech stacks? Civilized modernity is more like a large Fortune 100 Corp than you might think

I agree. Perhaps the fire is entropy. Thus staffs police & fight to exact its opposing effects (motivation, mutation, transformation, expansion), if that makes any sense.

Semi related - I’ve worked with teams that complained about the amount of firefighting, and ones that didn’t. The difference was 0% the number of actually unanticipated emergencies that were needed to be dealt with, but rather a statement on the resilience of the team.
