Come to think of it, a more idiomatically accurate translation of “jugaad” would be “makeshift mediocrity”. As in slapped-together in a way that just barely does the job. The attempt to pretend it is resourceful improvisation, let alone innovation, is totally premium mediocre

I understand the sentiment behind this but I don’t think utilitarian ethic translates to mediocrity. Long term it’s worse and short term it can lead to better outcomes. But yeah when Indians try to venerate jugaad, it’s definitely cringeworthy.

true story. On way to st. Catherine’s the cable for the accelerator peddle broke on the taxi. The driver found some rope and kludged together a new “peddle”, instead of being stranded on the roadside, we were back on it in 10 minutes. Far from mediocre behavior IMHO.
