This Renee-Zeynep debate is interesting. I can’t decide who’s right. Which makes me think we’re all missing some factor.https://twitter.com/noUpside/status/1185250469670600704 …

where we came down on health misinformation earlier this year was that its creators could post it, but the reco engine would not promote it, and FB would not accept $ for ads. is that policy violating freedom of speech?

if we're talking about Free Speech as in 1st amendment "the government cannot arrest you for what you say", I think Renee is right. But Zeynep has a point + IMO is talking about is something more recent and new, and maybe we need a new language for thinking and talking about it

I would argue the missing factor is exit. No one is being forced to use Facebook. Tech platforms get disrupted like progress, one death at a time.(at the slowest)

I don't think they're missing anything (they're both very good on this stuff), but I think the underlying factor that they have chosen to take as a given for purposes of this debate is Facebook's unprecedented scale. Without that, there's no question of violating speech rights.

If you had 10 platforms the size of Snapchat, Pinterest, and Twitter and none the size of Facebook, all of their speech moderation policies would be lower-stakes.

This is that stupid Lloyd Center case all over again, and although it seems rightly decided at the time, it's increasingly clear that the trend established in that case is going to cause all the problems the pamphleteers said it would

That is to say: you can diminish people's rights to hold and disseminate ideas the government doesn't like simply by eliminating public spaces in the first instance, and saying private spaces aren't anything the government can control...

Allow me to make a point that I think lurks in the background to all this, but not one wants to admit it. What are we ACTUALLY trying to do here? 1/

The liberal "consensus" in the US, which justifies many beliefs, like gay rights, is built on the idea that you're free to do what you like if no harm is caused. This viewpoint is used to argue against the idea that some things are icky in the eyes of god (or "the community") 2/
