if we're talking about Free Speech as in 1st amendment "the government cannot arrest you for what you say", I think Renee is right. But Zeynep has a point + IMO is talking about is something more recent and new, and maybe we need a new language for thinking and talking about it

I would argue the missing factor is exit. No one is being forced to use Facebook. Tech platforms get disrupted like progress, one death at a time.(at the slowest)

I don't think they're missing anything (they're both very good on this stuff), but I think the underlying factor that they have chosen to take as a given for purposes of this debate is Facebook's unprecedented scale. Without that, there's no question of violating speech rights.

If you had 10 platforms the size of Snapchat, Pinterest, and Twitter and none the size of Facebook, all of their speech moderation policies would be lower-stakes.
