In watching TV from the recession era, 2007-14, it strikes me that people anticipated everything that was going wrong, but just way underestimated the magnitude and way overestimated the ability of governance to compensate. Off by an order of magnitude on both fronts.

I think it's probably a solid line of analysis; however the nature of the analysis is that it can only be back-watching. Trying to extrapolate future trends from it won't work. There's no weighting that would favor one reading versus another w/o knowing the outcomes predicted.
