In watching TV from the recession era, 2007-14, it strikes me that people anticipated everything that was going wrong, but just way underestimated the magnitude and way overestimated the ability of governance to compensate. Off by an order of magnitude on both fronts.

Weirdest case to me is Deep Space Nine, which has the feel of post-9/11 sci-fi despite airing entirely during the 90s.
