Bozobits should be called bozogigabytes. They’re rarely 1-bit decisions. We’re still not used to an exit >> voice defaults, so exits are still far more fraught than they need to be. We bring unnecessary war-refugee level exit drama to twitter mutes

Exit early, exit often. Exit small, exit tiny. Dump the drama. Exits are just glorified unilateral “no” decisions where a counterparty is confused about the level of enforceable mutuality. The size/significance of your median exit decision should halve every 18 months.

Like you, I get stressed about muting. So, in my twitter client (I've rolled my own), I can downgrade an account, which causes the opacity of tweets by that account to reduce by 20%. 5 downgrades and you get unfollowed/muted. (Any like/retweet brings you back to 100%.)

I no longer get stressed about it, it’s gotten much easier with practice
