I think this is why Instagram celebs etc who model clothes and other product use in live-use contexts are gaining influence. Also movie stars who show off a style through entire stories. Not haute couture of course, but I suspect haute couture is probably weakening too.

Instagram celebs usually model smaller brands trying to get exposure. Mid market giants rarely use this avenue cause their primary advantage is location, ie they are on every corner. High fashion doesn’t give a damn about either of these unless you’re Kendal Jenner.

The primary attribute of any fashion trend is communicating being in an “in-group”. The actual item matters very little, it’s the people who wear it first that do. If the initial in-group signaling this is too big, this effect fails to materialize
