How important are current lineages for explaining current tribalism? In our early history affinity was a good proxy for relatedness. So relatedness cues didn't need to be hard-coded. Affinity cues were sufficient. Today we form tribes around things as trivial as shirt color.

Yes. I read "The Memetic Tribes of Culture War 2.0. " That piece is more in line with my own thinking about tribalism in the current culture war.

I had just seen someone suggest that race-based tribalism runs deeper than other kinds, because race tracks genetic relatedness. I was basically just thinking out loud, trying to put my finger on why I find that implausible, even if the premise is granted.
