Sounds a lot like Nassim Taleb's ideas on "antifragility." An antifragile thing is something that actually gains from distress and attacks on itself. Whereas something that's robust simply does not get hurt by it.

So, a washing machine can be robust but (at least with current designs) can't be antifragile. Whereas your immune system is antifragile, not robust.
